Synopsis

Kim is horrified when she finds out that she must leave her 'posh' school and her past behind.  Change is not only on the cards as she adjusts to her new and very different school, she must also face the change in her feelings as she meets the captivating character Sugar.

Julie Burchill has worked for most of the major English press including the Spectator, Daily Mail, Sunday Times and the Guardian. She describes her experience of living in Brighton on the website Kiss and Yell:

"I have been living in Brighton for one year and three months now and I do not believe I will ever want to leave - especially not to go back to London..."

Comments/reviews:

Sugar Rush is the story of a 15 year old girl who discovers she is a lesbian in the same year as her parents split up and she has to switch from her posh private school to a local comprehensive. She also learns that her mother is as much use as a chocolate fireguard - when she runs off to the tropics with her toyboy.

Burchill's uneven style doesn't offer the reader an easy ride: identities are as ambiguous as her narrative. One of the main characters has two names, which the author alternates at random. The impenetrable density of the teenage idiom is almost impossible to follow without some careful re-reading. Obviously, teenage characters must use authentic dialogue, but Burchill's determination to be cool obstructs her meaning.

If any teenager wasn't insecure and obsessed with their own school/cool status before reading this, they certainly would be afterwards. Sugar Rush is a catalogue of drink and drugs expressed in the language of adolescent failure.
