Ale Fever

A Parody of Sea Fever by John Masefield
By Harold Lawrence

I must go down to the pub again, I long for a pint and pie,
And all I ask is a tall glass and ale to wet the inside.
When the booze kicks, I begin to sing and my hands stop shaking
As a red mist envelops my brain, there's a cold dawn waiting

I must go down to the pub again, I must call for a pint of 'Pride'.
It's a wild call and a clear call and may not be denied.
And all I crave is a couple of sips to keep the tongue from drying
And sit in the gloom of a smoke filled room, with my need and my greed a'vying.

I must go down to the pub again, it's a vagrant gypsy life,
It's a lonely way, it's a trial each day, and it's my opiate from strife.
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow boozer
And a comatosed deep and dreamless sleep when the long trick's over
