Saved from the Waves

Sarah Hutchings - Marketing Manager, QueenSpark Books

I'm not very good at lists so this is my choice today. Yesterday it could have been a completely different story...

1) The Bone People - Keri Hulme
I love the rhythm of the language in this book and the wild, remote New Zealand landscapes she describes. And I find it inspirational that the author worked and re-worked the novel over a twelve year period. I'm funny like that.

2) Oyster - Janette Turner Hospital
A chilling tale of Australian outback weirdness.

3) On the Black Hill - Bruce Chatwin
A quaint and heartwrenching story about the deep bond between male twins in rural Wales.

4) Who Will Run the Frog Hospital - Lorrie Moore
Alongside A Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers this is my favourite tale of childhood friendship. Touching and beautifully written.

5) Riddley Walker - Russell Hoban
A post apocalyptic tale that is strange, haunting and unique. Once you get used to the Clockwork Orangesque language you'll be fine. There's a glossary at the back, which makes it easier.

Comments/reviews:

Bone People : the quintessential, asexual, biclutural Aotearoa novel. At fourteen forced my doctor father who was relapsing into cancer to see a drug rep who promised to give a copy for free after blabbing on about the merits of Amoxil.
He gave me my copy, was called away to pronounce his best friend dead and before I finished reading our lives were upside down.

Keri Hulme: the consumate story teller, even to stories she couldn't possibly have known at the time.

I am most thankful
