This publication is dedicated to all those who have made Brighton + Hove the most godless city in the country. (National Census 2001)

Unbelievers and reformers whose names appear range from the anarchist Peter Kropotkin to Princesses Victoria and Alice, daughters of Queen Victoria. Also included: philosopher Herbert Spencer, father of the modern postal system Rowland Hill, pioneer of the Co-operative movement G J Holyoake and writers: Ivy Compton-Burnett, Arnold Bennett and Patrick Hamilton.

The author, now retired, is the former secretary of the National Secular Society.
