Born in Brighton in 1972, Emily Gravett left the city at the age of 16 to travel all over the UK for eight years, before settling in Wales with her partner. After the birth of her daughter, Emily decided to pursue a career in what she claims is her only skill: Drawing. She returned to Brighton in 2001 with her family, and managed to convince Brighton University to take her on to the Illustration degree course, despite the fact that she had few formal qualifications other than an A in GCSE Art.

In 2004, in the final year of her degree, Emily submitted Wolves to the Macmillan Prize for Illustration, and won. Wolves, a picture book for children,was subsequently published by Macmillan and went on to receive rave reviews, winning the Nestle Children's Book Prize Bronze Award in 2005 as well as the Kate Greenaway medal in 2006.

Emily continues to produce picture books from her attic in Brighton, which overlooks the South Downs.
