Rudyard Kipling 1865 - 1936
Writer who spent some years in Rottingdean
Plaque on site of Kipling's house
Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay in 1865.
He moved to Rottingdean in 1897 following a family quarrel with his brother in-law. Rudyard's aunt: Georgina Burne-Jones had a holiday home in Rottingdean and it was here in North End House that Rudyard's son John was born. During his 'Rottingdean Period' Kipling produced some of his most revered and memorable works: including kim, stalky and co. and the Just So Stories.
At the Grange museum, Rottingdean (admission free) there is a Kipling Room, dedicated to the writer, which includes a reconstruction of the study from his house in the village: The Elms.
In 1902, Kipling bought a seventeenth century house near Burwash, Sussex and moved to this more secluded location in 1903.
