Vive La Kemptown Carnival

My first "moment" in Brighton was when I came to look my first flat in Kemptown. I was living outside of Brighton at the time and the whole place seemed to have this magic quality to me - I was really looking forward to living in this quirky utopia. We parked a few streets away from where our new flat was located and as we walked towards the street the noise of a carnival ensued. At this point my mother called me eager to hear about the new place. I could barely hear her but she said "What on earth is going on there?" I squeaked something about a carnival and hundreds of people but as I hung up I had a slightly wary thought: "How on earth are we going to get to sleep if this is what it is like at the weekend around here?" Vive la Kemptown Carnival!

Comments/reviews:

A family trip to Rottingdean beach. I'm 3 or 4 years old. "Don't worry, I've got you." says my dad, holding me while I balance on an inflatable dolphin in the sea. I'm not exactly enjoying the experience: I can't swim and I'm terrified of falling off. Sure enough, thanks to his cack-handedness, with no warning I'm under the water. What was probably a split second is now frozen in my mind like a photograph: I'm looking up at the sunlight from below the surface. Luckily, before I can drown, I'm dragged - crying - up the shingle to the safety of my mum. After that I refuse to go near the water or believe a word my dad says. And even today, I still won't look a dolphin in the eye...
